I’m just going to say the quiet part out loud. I wish more architects and builders would consider energy and flow BEFORE choosing a site, designing, and building a home! And I wish more homeowners would work with a Feng Shui professional BEFORE building the addition, knocking down walls, or rearranging the structural layout of a space.

WHY? Because you’re not just setting a foundation, you’re shifting energy flow and that can cause a dramatic shift in the way the home feels and, more importantly, the outcomes that the people living in it will have in life!

Contractors, architects, and designers are rarely trained in this. They optimize for code, budget, and aesthetics. Nobody in the room is asking “how will this change the energy that moves through the home?” and “how will it affect the people in the long term?” That’s the gap a Feng Shui consultant fills.

This shows up in ways that are both energetic and deeply practical. It’s important to think about how the home will be used and what the flow will be before those plans are set, not just aesthetically, but energetically.

Once the fireplace, wood stove, or window location is finalized, it will be a permanent workaround for every piece of furniture you try to place.

Placing a second floor or an addition can suppress or shift energy flow, which can weaken different parts of your life potential.

When you knock down walls, you can unknowingly create harsh energy flows that make the space feel open, but might also create feelings of exposure and anxiety.

How much frustration is it going to cause you after the build to have to move the couch out to reach the one outlet that was centered on the wall?

How many times a day are you going to navigate that bottleneck where the doors open into each other before it starts to wear on you? (We have this set up of ‘arguing doors’ in our house and I can tell you the answer is many, many times! Ergh!!)

How much sleep are you going to lose when your bed has to be placed in a way that makes your energy vulnerable?

How much energy are you going to spend trying to correct, rearrange and work around decisions that were set in stone before you ever settled in?

These are all situations I’ve seen that could have been caught by considering the feel, flow and support needed, but those that are looking at it are not considering the energetic impacts of the walls, drains, outlets, skylights and more.

In my personal practice, I don’t pretend to be a site engineer, architect or designer, but I do know that my insights add value to the decision making process and the final space. Whether it’s consulting about site selection, direction, reviewing blueprints and pre-renovation plans, or balancing the elements of the final design, this is another layer to consider before rather than after the drywall goes up.

The cost of a Feng Shui consultation in the early stages of a build or renovation is a fraction of what it costs to live with, or try to remedy, a structural energy problem. It’s definitely a small portion of the overall cost of these projects. And the value of being in a home that feels good, flows well and supports your highest potential is exponential.

When I enter any home for a consultation, I always say we are looking at what you have going on and doing our best to correct any flawed energy flow. But when you build or renovate you have the opportunity to create the ideal energy flow and head off any challenges. Why not take it?!

If you’ve got a big home build or project on the horizon, I’d love to chat. I have resources and considerations to share, and if you want more support I can share which of my services would be most supportive of you and your situation. Schedule a chat here.
