Moving into a new home is one of life’s most exciting times! You’ve got keys in your hand, empty rooms full of possibility, and a blank slate to work with. But before you start arranging furniture and hanging pictures, there’s something worth considering that most moving checklists leave out entirely: the energy already living in your new space.

Every home holds the energetic imprint of the people who lived there before you. That includes the energy of the emotions, struggles, and joy that happened there, and it lingers long after the previous residents have packed their boxes and moved on. You may not be able to see it, but you can feel it. Things like heaviness in a particular room or the way a space just doesn’t quite feel like yours yet are signs.

Truthfully, before I studied Feng Shui, I didn’t know this “predecessor energy” was a thing. But after 20 years of practice, it seems common to me. I always ask, “did you do an energy clearing on your home before you moved in”? It surprises me how many people unpack and settle in without considering the energetic soup they are diving into. They’ll deep clean every nook and cranny before unpacking, but never consider clearing the energy too.

Energy clearing is an ancient practice in many cultures. It’s not about fear or superstition. It is about being conscious that you are stepping into a space with a history, and choosing to claim it as your own and set the intention of it before it muddies your own energy and potential.

I’ve moved a lot, and before I settle in, there are three solid steps I take: clean the space deeply, clear the energy, and set an intention for the energy allowed in. It’s like putting your energetic stamp on the space.

Of course, that’s not all. Once you have a blank space and clear intentions, Feng Shui becomes an incredible tool to design a home that actively supports the life you want to live. (Sadly, many people skip this step as well.)

When a home is aligned with Feng Shui, it naturally supports your well-being and daily life. Spaces feel lighter, more harmonious, and easier to move through. Energy flows smoothly, creating a sense of safety, focus, and relaxation. Your home can actively support relationships, health, creativity, and your overall sense of momentum, making it a space that doesn’t just look good, it feels good and works for you every day.

If I could wish one thing for anyone moving into a new home, it would be this: take the time to clear and align the energy from the start. Moving is the perfect opportunity to predefine the energetic slate and set your home up with intention, and an energy flow that genuinely supports the life you are creating.

A home with clear and balanced energy makes a real difference in your day-to-day life, helping you feel more grounded, supported, and energized.
